Born in Reading in 1978, I completed my foundation at Central St. Martin’s College of Art & Design in London between 1997 and 1998. I continued on to complete my BA (Hons) at the Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art at the University of Oxford from 1998 to 2001.

My work is heavily influenced by the fact that I am one of a conjoined set of identical twins. My twinning creates resonant psychological dimensions that are reflected in my compositions, for instance paired or mirrored motifs recur throughout my work, often creating surrogate double portraits. My magnetic attraction to doubled imagery emerges in my manipulation of shadows and mirrors in my latest body of work. I employ found objects in conjunction with paint to express my ideas.

A very poignant influence in this body of work, was a photograph I came across of a door to Marcel Duchamp’s studio at 11 rue Larrey in Paris (1927). The single door serves as two doorways, it’s a double door sharing one hinge. As a result, when it swings on its hinges to close the entrance to one room, it opens another. For me, Duchamp’s studio door symbolizes the double life an identical twin feels they have before him/herself. It represents the point at which you can choose a certain path in life, whether through your own free will, or as a conscious decision to be different from one’s ‘other half’. There is then, this removed state - an opportunity to see the path you could have chosen, whilst at the same time living your own chosen path. This idea is perfectly encapsulated in the symbolism behind this image.
